Which camera brand would you choose?

I'm looking for an upgrade to my current cameara. I've had it for about 3 1/2 years, and it was just a regular ole digital Sony Camera . I LOVE it, but I'm ready for something better, for better quality pictures. I would love to be able to frame some of the kids, and so I want something with great quality! But at the same time I need something that works at a good speed. Catchin my 8 mo is a hard task. So I also need somthing that will make the pictures crisp, and clear.

I've been looking into :
* Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi Black ~ 10.1 MP SLR Camera w/ 18-55mm Zoom Lens
*Canon PowerShot S5-IS Black ~ 8 MP Digital Camera w/ 12x Optical Zoom & Image Stabilization
*Nikon D40 Black 6.1 MP Digital SLR Camera w/ 18-55mm Zoom Lens Kit
*Fujifilm FinePix S700 Black ~ 7.1 MP Digital Camera w/ 10x Optical Zoom & Image Stabilization

Your input is greatly appreciated! I love taking pictures of my kids, and just want to step it up a level without going to school!

Definitely the S5is!

From the cameras you mentioned, it will give you consistently better images than any of the others. Here's why:

The low-end DSLR fans will dispute this ... but the difference here - and I'm just discussing the four cameras you mentioned, is a difference in quality of the lenses involved, not the cameras themselves ... although the quality of construction and materials in the body of the S5is is also WAY better than the body quality of the Rebel or D40.

Those two 18-55 zooms on the Rebel and the D40 don't have the quality that the S5's lens has, either in quality of the glass or the quality of construction.

Besides, if you buy the S5 you can also afford a Canon speedlight (I'd suggest the 430 EX) for about the same as you'd pay for either of the two DSLR kits you mentioned.

And I can promise you that the external flash will absolutely improve the shots you take of your kids. (Heck, I'll even give you few free pointers if you'll contact me through my site (below) after you get the camera.)

But here's a hint:
-- buy the S5is
-- charge the battery and load the sd card
-- set the camera to P (program mode)
-- attach the flash, and set it to TTL
-- indoors? white ceilings? tilt the flash head up to 45 degrees ... or maybe 90 degres ...
-- and start shooting.

Biggest tip ... to avoid that dreadful "shutter lag" (which is minimal on an S5 anyhow, but still exists), develop the habit of pressing the shutter button half way down as you're preparing to shoot. (See my tutorial on this - also at the website below.

Believe me, I understand the challenges of photographing kids, especially the littlest ones. I have two beautiful granddaughters. And although I do my "professional" work with couple of full sized Nikon DSLRs, the one camera I always have when I'm with them is my trusty little Canon S3is (the S5's predecessor). Unlike the S5, it doesn't have the hotshoe that allows you to attach an external flash. Otherwise they're functionally the same.

Anyhow ... I'd go for the Canon S5is ... and Good Luck!
